Built in 1942, this quaint theater in Mission is one of the last left in Texas with art pueblo styling. It has provided three generations of Valley residents and visitors with top-notch entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere. The theater reopened in 2009 and offers an array of performances, space for private event rentals, and a movie premiere venue for independent filmmakers in the Rio Grande Valley. Housed in two historic buildings in the downtown Mission area, the museum opened its doors to locals and visitors alike in 2002. It now maintains long-term and temporary exhibits while hosting a variety of events and programs for participants of all ages. The museum is also active in local celebrations and family-friendly events, such as their “Movies on the Lawn” summer series. Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park

As part of the World Birding Center, this park is a globally recognized destination for bird-watching. The Rio Grande Valley is fortunate to be a region where more than 525 species of birds converge through yearly migrations. Just within the park’s boundaries, birders can spot some 358 species of birds. If you or someone in your family is interested in outdoor activities and nature, Bentsen is the ideal spot to develop knowledge of local flora and fauna. Visitors can take transportation shuttles, enjoy the bike trails, or walk throughout the park while searching for unique plants and animals. The park features a two-story observation tower, two enclosed bird blinds, a birding wall, and water features that allow visitors to see the birds up close. National Butterfly Center – NABA International Butterfly Park

In the Lower Rio Grande Valley, you can see some 150 species of North American butterflies. In fact, nearly 40% of all 700+ butterfly species found in the United States can be seen in the counties in the southernmost tip of Texas. The National Butterfly Center is the butterfly capital of the USA with a great volume of wild, free-flying butterflies and the largest native plant botanical garden in the United States. This 100-acre preserve is right in your backyard, so take advantage this summer! Schedule a visit with your friends and family.
