MISSION, TX – The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Mission Consolidated Independent School District distributed backpacks to district students on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Veterans Memorial High School located at 700 E. 2 Mile Line in Mission, Texas. A portion of the proceeds generated from The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Tom Landry Golf Classic held in March 2018 provided 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for Mission CISD students.
With over 4,000 in attendance including students and their families, many individuals began to line up early in the morning to receive a free backpack with school supplies, a free haircut, a free eye screening, a visit to an immunization clinic and a sports physical for a small fee. These additional services were provided by many other organizations from the Mission area community.
“The 2,000 backpacks our students received through the help of the Tom Landry Golf Classic have a tremendous impact for the students and their families as they prepare for the start of school,” said Cris Valdez, Mission CISD interim superintendent. “This not only helps families make sure their children have what they need to start the school year, it also can help them stretch their back to school budgets.” The Back to School Bash was about more than just distributing backpacks with school supplies. “The festive atmosphere included a pep rally, designed to get everyone in the community excited about the start of a new school year and it also offered a true, one-stop-shop event for many back to school related needs,” Valdez said.
The Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce would like to thank those who volunteered and H-E-B for donating 500 of the backpacks distributed to students at the event.
