A Brief History About the Summer Games of Texas

The Games of Texas was created by the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation(TAAF) in the summer of 1986 and in its initial iteration was a 10-event festival hosted in the city of San Antonio. The event is approved annually by the United States Olympic Committee as a State Game Program and the TAAF governs it.

Since it’s initial celebration, the festival has moved to different cities throughout the state, enticing amateur athletes to places like Dallas, Lubbock, Bryan, and then, last year, McAllen, with events taking place all throughout the Greater Rio Grande Valley – including Mission.

Last year’s festival saw 20,000 visitors here in the McAllen-Mission-Edinburg metropolitan area, with 7,316 of them competing in the games.

And just as we did last year, the Greater Mission Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure everyone’s needs are met.
